Lexington, North Carolina is known as the “Barbecue Capital of the World.”
The origin of BBQ sauce is quite a mystery. There is no agreed-upon date but it is known that the first barbecue sauces were made with vinegar and pepper!
Another mystery in the BBQ world is where the term barbecue came from. There is the Haitian word “barbacoa” that could be a reference. In French, the supposed name is "barbe a queue" which means "from beard to tail."
Southern-style coleslaw made with ketchup and vinegar is referred to as… Red Slaw.
When is the best day of the year to eat BBQ? The 4th of July, Memorial Day, and Labor Day top the charts are the most popular days.
