The History and Culture of Dillon

Dillon, Colorado, is a home rule municipality located in Summit County, Colorado. The original town of Dillon was built as a stage stop and trading post on the northeast side of the Snake River. The town was named for Tom Dillon, who owned the land at the time.

Summit County has a long history that dates back to 1811 with early fur trappers. In 1860, Summit County was established as one of the Colorado Territory's original 17 counties. Breckenridge and Dillon were two of the first towns established in Summit County.

In 1960, Dillon had become a bustling town with 814 residents, and it was decided that it needed to be moved due to plans for creating Lake Dillon Reservoir. The entire town was moved up a hill before filling the reservoir, and today, its original location is 250 feet underwater!
