Valentine’s Day Trivia

From Doug!

As you know, Doug LOVES trivia. So, it may be past Valentine’s Day but he wanted to share some of his favorite Valentine’s Day trivia with you all.

  1. Did you know that more than 8 billion conversation hearts are manufactured each year?

Those irritatingly sweet and addictive hearts are not going anywhere anytime soon! Thank goodness they have a long shelf life!

  2. Did you know that St. Valentine wasn’t 1 person but actually refers to several people?

Our favorite part of this is that one of the 3 different martyrs named Valentine or Valentinus from the Catholic church, continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young men, even though emperor Claudius killed him for it later.

  3. Did you know that there was a Pagan holiday set at the same time as Valentine’s?

There was a festival called Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to the god of agriculture, Faunus. Later, at the end of the 5th century, St. Valentine’s replaced this interesting holiday.

  4. Did you know that 145 MILLION Valentine’s Day cards are sent every year?

That doesn’t count the cards sent by kids! This all started in 1840 when a woman named Esther A. Howland began selling mass-produced cards. She is knowns as the “Mother of the Valentine.”

  5. Did you know it wasn’t initially about Romance?

The English poet Geoffrey Chaucer recorded the day as a romantic celebration for the first time in 1375. It was also always considered commercial and insincere from the get-go. But, we believe all holidays are what you make of them, so we wish you lots of love this Valentine’s!
